7th August 2015
We are launching the new Home of our Delight community programme!
3.00 – 5.00pm Tuesday 15 September, at Mells Barn
This will be the first of twelve monthly drop-in community meetings in Mells (from October 2015 these will be held at Mells Café) where local people can come along, find out about progress so far, or get involved as volunteers researching the history of their village.
All are welcome to come and join us at the Barn for tea and cake to find out more.
For this first phase we are particularly looking for volunteers to:
- Come forward with any memories, artefacts, information about Mells and Vobster and World World War 1
- Help us research historic archives, locally and online
- Help transcribe selected documents of the period
- We are particularly keen to hear from any military historians in the area to focus on the regiments and World War 1 locations relevant to the men listed on the village memorial
We have free training sessions planned with Frome Museum, Frome Library and Somerset Heritage Centre for anyone wanting to get involved in this exciting project.
Also beginning at the end of September: Frome College will be running an after school history club specifically to help research the impact of the First World War on Mells and Vobster.
If you know any young people who might like to be involved in this and other youth opportunities, please get in touch.
Interestingly to note, while we looking around the Barn grounds, this is clearly the higher ground from where the 1921 photographs of the village memorial being unveiled were taken, then with open fields beyond.Back to Blog Home
